Two 45s with different nibs for different jobs. The 45 stub is still on daily journal duty. It’s one of the best nibs I have and makes the writing that much better. The other 45 with a fine steel point is my daily user at work. I switched to using a Field Notes Heavy Duty as my work notebook. Compared to the Midori and Mnemosyne I had been using, I like the Field Notes size and stiff covers better. The paper doesn’t have the same level of compatibility for all kinds fountain pens as the Japanese options, but with the right nib & ink combo Field Notes is fine for what I need at work.
The Platinum Desk Pen continues scratching along in its unique way. An auditory and tactile experience to go along with the visual of lines on the page.
The Pro Gear Slim just came back from getting nib work by Kirk Speer at Pen Realm. It was a music nib with a gigantic block of tipping that just didn’t do much for me as a writer. Kirk put a two-sided hybrid grind on it. The forward side is a stub with real line variation. The reverse has a little change from vertical to horizontal, but provides a thinner and more even line overall. Kirk was great to work with as he helped me figure out what kind of grind would work on the nib. My only regret is I didn’t get in touch with him sooner. This is the second two-sided grind I’ve obtained in the last few months and I think it’s the way to go for most of my broad or double broad nibs. Now I need less procrastination and more getting pens in the mail for new grinds.
Last is the Waldmann Carbon F. I have tried Waldmanns once or twice in a shop or at a show. I like their style and build quality but was never struck by one enough to want to buy it. This pairing of silver and carbon fiber is mighty good looking and Fountain Pen Day sales provided a good deal, so here it is. The nib is on the firm side and writes a smooth, consistent line. It’s nice if unremarkable. A stub or cursive italic grind would liven it up. I think the Carbon F has a lot of overlap with the GvFC Guilloche I got last summer so it will likely come down to keeping one or the other rather than both, but that’s something to worry about at later time.
